ARFID

Helping children and adults with ARFID reduce anxiety around eating, improve nutrition, expand food choices, and address weight and growth concerns, while creating a supportive environment where individuals can build a healthier relationship with themselves and food.

What is
ARFID?

ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) is an eating disorder that involves persistent avoidance or restriction of certain foods. This can be due to sensory sensitivities, fear of adverse reactions (such as choking or vomiting), or a general lack of interest in eating.

Unlike other eating disorders, ARFID is not driven by body image concerns. It is a complex condition that can affect people of all ages, often leading to nutritional deficiencies, anxiety around food, and significant impacts on daily life.

Our
Approach

I help support individuals with ARFID by providing understanding, patience, and a tailored approach. Specialising in assisting adults, children, and parents through ARFID recovery, I focus on creating a safe, supportive environment that encourages progress at each individual's pace.

My approach involves gently expanding food choices in a no-pressure way, helping individuals build confidence around eating, reduce fear responses, and develop a healthier relationship with food. I also address underlying trauma and co-occurring conditions, such as autism, ensuring a comprehensive and holistic path to recovery.

Whether working with children, adults, or parents, my focus remains compassionate, client-led, and oriented toward long-term success.

  • What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that uses hypnosis to help individuals achieve a state of focused attention and deep relaxation. In this state, the person becomes more receptive to positive suggestions and changes in behaviour, thoughts, or feelings. Hypnotherapy is often used to help manage conditions such as anxiety, panic attacks, stress, phobias, chronic pain, and even behaviours like smoking or overeating. It can also assist in overcoming past trauma or negative patterns, allowing individuals to reframe their experiences and make lasting, positive changes.
  • How do I know if hypnotherapy is right for me?
Do you struggle with anxiety or feel overwhelmed? Are negative emotions making you feel lost and worthless? Are you trapped in a cycle of yo-yo dieting, recovering from an eating disorder, or dealing with disordered eating and feeling isolated? What is holding you back? We often create our own obstacles—procrastination, self-sabotage, and before we know it, we’ve missed our goals again. But why does this keep happening? This is where hypnotherapy can make a real difference. It helps uncover the root of these blocks and guides you towards lasting change. Hypnotherapy can be beneficial for anyone experiencing distress, anxiety, or emotional discomfort. Whether you're struggling with stress, trauma, self-limiting beliefs, or simply seeking a deeper understanding of yourself, hypnotherapy may offer the relief and transformation you're seeking.
  • How can hypnotherapy help me?

  • Can therapy for eating disorders be done online?
Yes, I offer online sessions, which many clients find helpful as they can receive support in the comfort and safety of their own home.
  • Is there a link between eating disorders and trauma?
Many people with eating disorders have experienced trauma, which can lead to disordered eating as a coping mechanism. I integrate trauma-informed care into my approach to address these root causes and ensure that clients receive holistic, empathetic support.
  • How do you work with athletes and RED-S?
For athletes with Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), I provide a compassionate, tailored approach to help address disordered eating behaviours while supporting the athlete's physical and mental well-being. • How does neurodivergence relate to eating disorders?
Neurodivergent individuals, including those with autism, ADHD, or other neurodevelopmental conditions, may experience heightened sensitivities to food, routines around eating, or anxiety related to food choices. These unique factors can contribute to the development of eating disorders. My approach is neurodivergent-affirming, recognising these challenges and offering tailored support to help individuals navigate their relationship with food and develop healthier eating habits.
  • How do I get started?
Simply reach out to book an initial consultation. We’ll discuss your situation, explore the best approach, and take the first steps toward a healthier relationship with food.
  • What is ARFID?
ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) is an eating disorder where individuals avoid or restrict food due to sensory sensitivities, fear of adverse reactions, or a general lack of interest in eating. Unlike other eating disorders, ARFID isn’t driven by concerns about weight or body image.
  • How do I know if I or my child has ARFID?
If you or your child are dealing with extreme food avoidance, limited food choices, anxiety around eating, or challenges with gaining or maintaining weight—without concerns about body image—ARFID could be a factor. A GP or healthcare professional can assess the situation and provide a diagnosis.
  • How can therapy help with ARFID?
I take a tailored, no-pressure approach, using exposure therapy, desensitisation strategies, and anxiety management to gently expand food choices and reduce fear around eating. Sessions are client-led and designed to make the process feel safe and manageable.
  • Do you work with children and adults?
Yes! I support children, adults, and parents, helping each person navigate ARFID in a way that suits their individual needs. Parents receive guidance on how to create a supportive environment for their child’s recovery.
  • Can ARFID be treated online?
Yes, I offer both in-person and online sessions. Many ARFID clients benefit from online support, as we can work in the comfort of their home, making the process feel less overwhelming.
  • Will my child grow out of ARFID?
ARFID is not something most children simply "grow out of" without intervention. While some children may expand their food choices over time, structured support can help them build confidence with food and prevent long-term struggles.
  • Is ARFID linked to autism or ADHD?
ARFID is more common in neurodivergent individuals, particularly those with autism or ADHD, due to sensory sensitivities and heightened anxiety around eating. My approach is neurodivergent-affirming, recognising and addressing these unique challenges.
  • Does ARFID treatment involve forcing new foods?
Absolutely not! My approach is gentle, patient, and always at the client’s pace. We focus on reducing anxiety, increasing comfort with food, and building confidence in a safe and supportive way.
  • Can ARFID be treated alongside other conditions like autism or disordered eating in sports?
Yes, ARFID can be treated alongside other conditions like autism or disordered eating in sports. In fact, it’s common for ARFID to co-occur with other conditions, and a holistic, individualised treatment plan is essential for addressing all aspects of a person’s needs. For example, treatment for ARFID might involve a combination of strategies like psychotherapy, exposure therapy, and family-based therapy, depending on the specific challenges. For individuals with autism, treatments might also incorporate sensory-based strategies and a focus on routine and structure. When disordered eating in sports is also a factor, a collaborative approach involving nutrition support, mental health professionals, and any relevant specialists is key to supporting recovery from both ARFID and the disordered eating behaviours. It’s important for therapists and healthcare providers to work together to tailor treatment that considers the person’s full range of needs, ensuring progress is made in all areas.
